DANCE! (Geoffrey Oryema - Ye Ye Ye)

Geoffrey Oryema

Some late-evening or early morning slow rock from Ugandan superstar Geoffrey Oryema

From Wikipedia:

Geoffrey Oryema (born April 16, 1953) is an internationally renowned Ugandan musician. At the age of 24, at the height of Idi Amin's power, Oryema was smuggled across the Ugandan border in the trunk of a car, following the death of his father, cabinet minister Erinayo Wilson Oryema, beginning a life in exile. Today his songs keep alive the languages of his youth - Swahili and Acholi and return to the lost country - the 'clear green land' of Uganda.

Oryema earned his international reputation following the release of his second album, Beat the Border. He has collaborated with, amongst others, Peter Gabriel. Gabriel's record label, Real World, helped with the first three of Oryema's albums, until his move to Sony International, a label established in France where Oryema resides since his exile. Besides his two native languagues mentioned earlier, he also sings in English and French.

On July, 2005 he performed at the LIVE 8: Africa Calling concert in Cornwall, and with 1 Giant Leap at the Live 8 Edinburgh concert.

Hmmm smuggled across the border …. imagine living through losing your father and going through all that …. there is a lot going on here in Africa - amazing things and shocking things as well … I also had my fair share of both extremes ….. thank u for telling me about him.

I have been working with Makh from Uganda, writer and poet, as part of our ArtMarketOnline project. Click to see his ArtMarketPages which includes also his poetry and short stories.

szavanna: great notes!  thanks for sharing this link!  through music, we can make connections to the larger world that cannot be made in any other way, because it is the great heartbeat and artbeat of the world that transcends all language, and unites us in a transcendent experience. … and we can feel the unity of all people, everywhere. you will love geoffrey oryema's work - he sings a lot about exile and loneliness, and in his songs he is really singing as well for the millions of adults and children who are now forever exiled from home and making new lives in foreign countries. I think this is part of his universal appeal.

True Happiness :) - as u see in my blog - I see the world though notes and rhythm -  whenever you listen to the songs of a country - you see a completely different picture from the one on CNN - a picture much more real, and much more honest and true …. so I am quite used to looking for the musicians when I try to learn about a country.

A lot can be done through music …. a magical tool ….
